United Nations Security Council Agrees on Gaza Cease-fire Resolution
Secretary Rice (Jan. 8): "It is obviously a very serious situation in Gaza. And while our goal must be the stabilization and normalization of Gaza through the implementation of a durable and fully respected cease-fire and an end to all terrorist activities, I think that this resolution shows that the Council and the United Nations is indeed seized of the matter. This resolution is a step toward our goals. It reflects the international community’s concern about the circumstances in Gaza and its desire for a sustainable peace in Gaza." Full Text

Deputy Secretary Negroponte (Jan. 8): "I first visited China in June of 1972 on a delegation led by Dr. Henry Kissinger at a time when our two countries had lived in political, economic and diplomatic isolation from each other for more than two decades. The changes in our relationship since that time have been truly dramatic. Our two countries have interactions and exchanges across the entire spectrum of human activity on a scale and depth that simply could not have been imagined when we first established diplomatic ties in 1979." Deputy Spokesman Wood (Jan. 8): "I think the Palestinians, in general, want to have peace and they want to be able to have their own country. They want to be able to live in peace. And what’s going on right now certainly doesn’t help that vision that Palestinians have for themselves, and that vision that others, including the U.S., have for the region...But what’s important is that we solve this present conflict and we go back to the Annapolis process and try to move forward."
