Learn about the essential role that civil society organizations play in a democracy and their contributions to democratic societies. Such organizations are often called nongovernmental organizations, or NGOs, because they are not an extension of the government's offices. These organizations often complement, supplement, or even challenge the work of the government by serving as advocates for the public, keeping government in check and encouraging reform and development.
